Understanding UK Alcohol Units

An alcohol unit is a standard measure used in the UK to help people keep track of their drinking. One unit is equivalent to 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. Since alcoholic  drinks come in different strengths and sizes, using units is the easiest way to tell how strong a particular  drink is and how much you're consuming.

Alcoholic Beverages

The official formula is simple: multiply the drink's volume in millilitres (ml) by its alcohol by volume percentage (ABV), and then divide the result by 1,000. This calculator does the maths for you, making it easy to monitor your intake. For a deeper look at your overall health, consider using our BMI Calculator.

The 14 Unit Weekly Guideline

To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the NHS advises both men and women not to regularly drink more than 14 units per week. It's also recommended to spread your drinking over three or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week, and to have several drink-free days each week.
