Understanding Your Annual Leave

Your Statutory Entitlement

All UK workers are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave per year. For a full-time worker on a 5-day week, this equates to 28 days. Your employer can choose to include the 8 bank holidays within this entitlement or offer them on top. Many employers offer more than the statutory minimum as a contractual benefit, with 25 days plus bank holidays being a common package.

This Calculator Site tool helps you track your allowance, but understanding the rules is key. For a detailed breakdown of your earnings, see our Take-Home Pay Calculator.

Pro Tip: Maximise Your Time Off

Make the most of your annual leave by planning strategically. By booking days around bank holidays and weekends, you can create longer breaks without using as many leave days. For example, taking 4 days off around a bank holiday weekend can give you 9 consecutive days off work.

UK Annual Leave By The Numbers

The rules around holiday entitlement can seem complex, but they are based on some key statutory figures. These numbers form the baseline for most employment contracts in the UK.
