Understanding eBay UK Seller Fees

Selling on eBay is a popular way to reach a massive audience, but it is important to understand the fee structure to price your items correctly and ensure you make a profit. eBay's fees have evolved over the years, with the main components now being a final value fee and a fixed charge per order since the introduction of their own managed payments system.

The Main Components of eBay Fees

The final value fee is the largest portion of the cost. For most categories, this is 12.8% of the total transaction amount. Crucially, this total amount includes both the final price of the item and the postage cost you charge the buyer. On top of this, there is a fixed fee of £0.30 for every order. An order can contain multiple items from the same buyer.

For example, if you sell a book for £10 and charge £3.50 for postage, your total sale is £13.50. The final value fee would be 12.8% of £13.50, which is £1.73. Adding the £0.30 fixed fee brings your total fees to £2.03. You can use our percentage calculator to quickly work out these figures.

Optional and Additional Fees

To increase your item's visibility, you can use Promoted Listings. This is an optional feature where you choose an additional percentage of the final sale price to pay as an advertising fee. This fee is only charged if the buyer clicks on your promoted listing and then purchases the item within 30 days. It can be a powerful tool, but it is wise to calculate your profit margin to decide on a suitable promotion rate.

Other fees can apply for optional listing upgrades, such as adding a subtitle or scheduling a listing to go live at a specific time. These are typically small, fixed charges.

Tips for Reducing Your Fees

There are several strategies to minimise your eBay fees. Achieving 'Top Rated Seller' status provides a 10% discount on your final value fees. You can also review your postage strategy; since the fee is charged on the total amount, offering free postage and incorporating the cost into the item price does not change the fee, but it can be more attractive to buyers. Always keep an eye out for eBay's promotional offers, which can provide a set number of listings with reduced or zero final value fees.
