Understanding Your Topsoil Needs

New Lawns

For laying new turf, a depth of 150mm is recommended to give the grass roots a healthy start.

Raised Beds

For flowers and most vegetables, a depth of 300mm provides ample room for root growth and nutrient uptake.

Vegetable Patches

Deeper rooting vegetables like carrots and potatoes will thrive with a soil depth of at least 450mm.

What is Topsoil?

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil, usually between 5 to 10 inches deep. It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms, making it the most fertile part of the soil. This is why it is essential for growing healthy plants, lawns, and vegetables.

When you are starting a new garden, creating a lawn, or filling a raised bed, using a quality topsoil provides the best possible start. It differs from the subsoil beneath it, which is lower in nutrients and more compacted. Our calculator helps you buy the right amount, avoiding waste and ensuring your project is a success from the ground up. For decorative stones, you might want to check our gravel calculator.
