Calculating the amount of flooring you need is more than just finding the area of your room. You must also account for wastage – the offcuts and extra pieces needed to fit the flooring around corners, doorways, and other obstacles. Our flooring calculator at Calculator Site makes this easy by adding a customisable wastage percentage.
For most rooms, a 10% wastage allowance is a safe bet. However, if your room has an unusual shape or if you are installing a patterned floor like herringbone, increasing this to 15% is advisable. It's always better to have a little extra than to run out just before the job is finished.
Pro Tip: Check Pack Sizes Carefully
Flooring is sold in packs, and the area covered per pack can vary significantly between manufacturers and product lines. Always double-check the m² per pack before purchasing. Our calculator uses this exact figure to determine how many packs you need to buy, ensuring you don't over or under-order.
Once you have the total area (room area + wastage), the final step is to divide this by the pack size. Since you can't buy a fraction of a pack, you must always round the result up to the nearest whole number. For example, if your calculation shows you need 7.2 packs, you must buy 8. This is a crucial step that our flooring calculator handles automatically to prevent costly mistakes.
