Since 2017, GCSEs in England have been graded on a 9 to 1 scale, replacing the old A* to G system. This new system allows for greater differentiation between students. Sixth forms and colleges often convert these grades into a points score to quickly assess an applicant's overall academic performance. For example, a grade 9 is worth 9 points, a grade 8 is worth 8 points, and so on. Our Calculator Site tool makes it easy to add up your total score.

Your total GCSE points score is a key factor for post-16 education providers. Many sixth forms and colleges have minimum point requirements for entry, or for specific A-Level subjects. A higher score demonstrates a consistent level of achievement across your subjects and can make your application more competitive. It's a standardised way for institutions to compare applicants from different schools. For other useful tools, check out our percentage calculator.
