Understanding UK Income Tax

Income Tax is the main tax you pay on your earnings in the UK. It is collected by HMRC and funds public services including the NHS, education, and defence. Most employed people have their Income Tax deducted automatically through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, meaning it comes out of your wages before you receive them. At Calculator Site, we built this tool to help you understand exactly how much of your salary goes to tax and what you actually take home.

The 60% Tax Trap

If you earn between £100,000 and £125,140, you lose £1 of your Personal Allowance for every £2 earned above £100,000. Combined with the 40% higher rate, this creates an effective marginal tax rate of around 60%. Pension contributions are one of the most effective ways to mitigate this. Use our Salary Sacrifice Calculator to see how much you could save.

UK Tax Bands for 2026/27

The UK uses a progressive tax system, meaning you pay different rates on different portions of your income. Only the income within each band is taxed at that rate, not your entire salary. If you are a Scottish taxpayer, different rates apply — use our Scottish Income Tax Calculator instead.
