Understanding Home Insulation

Proper home insulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce your energy bills and improve comfort. It acts as a barrier, slowing the movement of heat out of your home in winter and into your home in summer. The better your insulation, the less work your heating and cooling systems have to do. At Calculator Site, we believe in empowering homeowners to make informed decisions, and understanding insulation is a great first step.

The effectiveness of insulation is measured by its R-value, but in the UK, we often talk about U-values for the whole structure (like a wall or roof). A lower U-value means less heat is escaping. Our calculator helps you estimate the materials for common projects like topping up loft insulation, which is often the most cost-effective measure.

Types of Insulation Material

There is a wide range of insulation materials available, each with different properties and costs. The most common for DIY loft insulation is mineral wool (glass or rock fibre) which comes in large rolls. It's relatively inexpensive and easy to handle. Other options include:

  • Sheep's Wool: A natural, breathable, and sustainable option that's great at managing moisture.
  • Rigid Foam Boards (PIR/EPS): More expensive but offer higher insulation value for a given thickness. Often used in floors or wall linings.
  • Blown-in Cellulose: Made from recycled paper, it's great for filling awkward spaces but requires professional installation.

This calculator focuses on roll-based materials, but you can adjust the roll dimensions and cost to model other types. To see how insulation impacts your heating costs, check out our Gas Cost Calculator.

Top-Up Your Loft Insulation

The most common UK insulation job is topping up existing loft insulation. The recommended depth is 270mm. If you have 100mm, you'll need to add a 170mm layer. Typically, the first layer is laid between the joists, and the second layer is laid at a right angle over the joists to prevent heat escaping through them (a phenomenon called thermal bridging).
