Understanding Maternity Pay

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is the legal minimum your employer must pay you while you're on maternity leave. It's designed to provide financial support during your time away from work. Our Maternity Pay Calculator helps you estimate your entitlement based on the latest UK government rates.

The calculation is split into two periods. For the first 6 weeks, you receive 90% of your average pre-tax weekly earnings. For the remaining 33 weeks, you receive a flat rate set by the government each year (£184.03 for 2026/27) or 90% of your earnings if that is less. This tool from Calculator Site makes it easy to see what to expect.

Enhanced (Contractual) Maternity Pay

Many employers offer more generous maternity pay than the statutory minimum. This is known as enhanced or contractual maternity pay. Check your employment contract or company handbook to see if you are entitled to a better package. This calculator only shows the statutory amount you are legally guaranteed if you are eligible.

Eligibility and Other Support

To be eligible for SMP, you need to have worked for your employer for at least 26 weeks by the end of the 15th week before your due date, and earn above the Lower Earnings Limit (£123 per week). If you don't qualify, you may be able to claim Maternity Allowance from the government. You can also check your entitlement to other benefits, like Child Benefit, using tools like our Child Benefit Tax Calculator.
