Understanding Your Notice Period

Notice periods are a crucial part of UK employment law, designed to provide a smooth transition when an employee leaves a company. They protect both the employer, who gets time to find a replacement, and the employee, who has a period of guaranteed pay. The length of the notice period is determined by either the statutory minimum set by law or the terms of your employment contract. The longer of the two is the one that applies.

This  calculator helps you determine the correct notice period. For more detailed salary calculations, you might find our Take-Home Pay Calculator useful.

Contractual vs. Statutory Notice

Always check your employment contract. While the statutory minimum is 1 week of notice for every year of service (up to 12 weeks), your contract may require a longer period, which is legally binding. This is especially common in senior roles. Our Salary Calculator can help you understand your pay during this period.

Notice Periods by the Numbers

The rules around notice periods can seem complex, but they are based on a few key figures defined in the Employment Rights Act 1996. Here are the most important numbers to know.

12 Weeks

Maximum statutory notice

1 Week

Minimum notice from employee

2 Years

Service needed for 2 weeks notice

How to use this Calculator Site tool

To use this calculator, simply enter your total years of service, your contractual notice period (if any), and the date you wish your notice to begin. The tool will automatically calculate your statutory minimum notice and determine which period (statutory or contractual) applies. It will then show you your final employment date.
