Notice periods protect both employers and employees during the transition when someone leaves a job. The statutory minimum notice period is set by law and increases with length of service, but your employment contract may specify a longer period. The longer of the two always applies.
Under the Employment Rights Act 1996, the statutory minimum notice from employer to employee is one week for each complete year of service (after the first month), up to a maximum of 12 weeks. The minimum notice from employee to employer is always one week, regardless of length of service, unless the contract specifies otherwise.
