Understanding Betting Odds

Betting odds can seem confusing, but they are simply a way to represent the probability of an outcome and the potential return on a wager. This calculator helps you translate between the three most common formats, making it easier to compare odds from different bookmakers and understand the value of a bet.

The Three Formats Explained

  • Decimal Odds: The simplest format. Your total return is your stake multiplied by the decimal odds. A £10 bet at 2.50 odds returns £25 (£15 profit + £10 stake).
  • Fractional Odds: Traditional in the UK. The fraction shows the profit relative to your stake. Odds of 3/2 mean you win £3 profit for every £2 you bet.
  • American (Moneyline) Odds: Centred around 100. Positive odds (+150) show the profit on a £100 stake. Negative odds (-200) show the stake needed to win £100 profit.

Implied Probability: The Hidden Percentage

Every set of odds has an 'implied probability' – the chance the bookmaker believes an outcome has of happening. For example, decimal odds of 2.00 (or 1/1 fractional) have a 50% implied probability. Understanding this helps you spot value. If you believe a team has a higher chance of winning than the odds suggest, that's a value bet.
