Understanding Your Fertility
Understanding when you are most fertile can significantly increase your chances of conceiving. The process is centred around ovulation, the release of an egg from your ovary.
How Ovulation Works
Your menstrual cycle has two main phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase. Ovulation occurs between them. The follicular phase starts on the first day of your period and ends with ovulation. The luteal phase starts after ovulation and lasts until your next period. While the follicular phase can vary in length, the luteal phase is usually a consistent 14 days for most women. Our calculator uses this principle to estimate your ovulation day.
Key Signs of Ovulation
Your body provides several clues that ovulation is approaching. Paying attention to these can help you time intercourse for the best chance of conception. Key signs include:
- Cervical Mucus Changes: As you approach ovulation, your cervical mucus becomes clearer, more slippery, and stretchy, often compared to raw egg white. This is the most fertile type of mucus.
- Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Rise: Your BBT is your lowest body temperature in a 24-hour period. It rises slightly (about 0.5°C) just after ovulation. Charting it daily can confirm ovulation has occurred.
- Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs): These home tests detect the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) that happens 24-36 hours before you ovulate.
Tips for Conception from UK Experts
Both the NHS and charities like Tommy's provide excellent advice. The key is to have regular, unprotected sex every 2 to 3 days throughout your cycle. You don't need to time it perfectly to the hour of ovulation. Reducing stress, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also beneficial for fertility.
