Understanding the Schengen 90/180 Day Rule

Since Brexit, UK passport holders are treated as third-country nationals when visiting the Schengen Area. This means you can stay for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without needing a visa. Understanding how this rule works is essential for anyone who travels frequently to Europe for holidays, business, or to visit family.

How the Rolling Window Works

The 90/180 rule uses a rolling window, not a fixed calendar period. On any given day, you look back over the previous 180 days and count how many of those days you spent in the Schengen Area. If the total is 90 or fewer, you are within the rules. This is important because it means you cannot simply "reset" your allowance by waiting for a new year or a new six-month period to begin.

Counting Days Correctly

Both the day you enter and the day you leave the Schengen Area count as full days. For example, if you fly into Paris on 1 March and fly home on 14 March, that counts as 14 days (not 13). Multiple short trips within the 180-day window are cumulative, so three two-week holidays would use 42 of your 90 days.

Days "Falling Off" the Window

As the 180-day window moves forward each day, days you spent in the Schengen Area gradually "fall off" the back of the window. For example, if you spent 14 days in Spain starting on 1 January, those 14 days will begin to fall off the window from 1 July onwards (180 days later). This is how your allowance gradually replenishes over time.

Schengen Area Countries

The Schengen Area currently comprises 29 countries. It includes most EU member states plus four non-EU countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). Notably, Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area, so time spent in Ireland does not count towards your 90-day limit. Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen Area for air and sea borders in March 2024, with full land border accession following in 2025.

Planning Your Travel

If you travel to Europe frequently, careful planning is essential. Use this calculator to track your trips and see how many days you have remaining before each journey. If you need to spend more than 90 days in a 180-day period, you will need to apply for a visa or long-stay permit from the specific country you wish to visit. Some countries offer digital nomad visas, student visas, or work permits that allow longer stays.
