Understanding Your Shed Base

The Importance of a Sub-Base

A sub-base is the most critical part of any shed foundation. It is a layer of compacted aggregate (usually MOT Type 1 hardcore) that creates a strong, level, and free-draining platform. It prevents your base from sinking or shifting, protecting your shed from structural damage.

Concrete Slab Base

A concrete slab is the ultimate shed foundation. It provides a solid, level, and impermeable floor. We recommend a depth of 100mm (4 inches) for most domestic sheds. You will need to build a timber frame (formwork) to contain the wet concrete while it sets.

Paving Slab & Gravel Bases

Paving slabs offer a stable and attractive alternative to concrete. For a gravel base, which provides excellent drainage, use our gravel calculator for more detailed estimates. Both require a solid sub-base and often a layer of sand for levelling.

Considering Decking?

A timber deck can also serve as a great shed base, especially on sloped ground. It raises the shed off the damp ground, improving air circulation. If you are considering this option, check out our decking calculator to plan your materials.
