Understanding Your Water Bill

In England and Wales, your  water bill is calculated in one of two ways: either based on your actual usage with a water meter, or based on your property's historical rateable value. Understanding which system you are on, and which would be cheaper, can lead to significant savings. This is especially true for smaller households in larger properties.

Calculators & Reference Tools

This Calculator Site tool is designed to help you compare these two billing methods. Metered bills consist of a fixed standing charge plus a charge for every cubic metre of water you use. Unmetered bills are based on a property valuation from before 1990, which often does not reflect the number of people living there. For more financial planning, consider our Take-Home Pay Calculator.

Could you save by switching to a meter?

The general rule of thumb is that you are likely to save money on a water meter if there are fewer people living in your home than there are bedrooms. For example, a couple living in a four-bedroom family home will likely pay much less on a meter than they do based on the high rateable value. You can use our Council Tax Calculator to check another key household bill.

Water Usage by the Numbers

Understanding average consumption helps put your own usage into context. Water companies use these figures for planning and investment.

How to use this Calculator Site tool

Select your current billing type, then enter the number of people in your home. If you are metered, input your estimated daily water usage in litres. If you are on a rateable value system, enter the rateable value from your bill. The calculator will then estimate your annual and monthly bill, and show you what the alternative would cost, helping you make an informed decision.
