Scaling Your Cake Recipe

Ever found the perfect  cake recipe, only to realise it calls for a tin size you don't own? This Calculator Site tool is your solution. Instead of guessing, you can accurately scale your ingredients up or down. Our calculator works by comparing the surface area of the original tin to the new tin. This gives you a precise multiplier for all your ingredients.

Cookware

For example, if you are moving from a 20cm round tin to a 23cm round tin, the new tin has about 1.32 times the area. Therefore, you should multiply all your ingredient quantities by 1.32. This ensures the depth of the cake batter remains consistent, which is crucial for even baking. You can find other useful kitchen converters like our Oven Temperature Converter to help with your baking.

Adjusting Baking Time & Temperature

Scaling ingredients is only half the battle. A larger, shallower cake will bake faster, while a smaller, deeper cake will need more time. As a rule of thumb, for a 20-25% change in area, adjust the baking time by 5-10 minutes. For larger changes, you may also need to adjust the oven temperature by 10°C to prevent the outside from burning before the middle is cooked. Round vs. Square Tins

A common baking dilemma is substituting a round tin for a square one. It's important to know that a 20cm round tin and a 20cm square tin are not equivalent. The square tin has a significantly larger surface area.
