How to use this Calculator Site tool

Enter your car's CO2 emissions in grams per kilometre (g/km). You can find this in your V5C logbook. Select whether it's the car's first year of registration and if its original list price was over £40,000. The calculator will then show your annual and monthly tax.

Understanding Car Tax (VED)

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), often called car tax or road tax, is a yearly tax for vehicles on UK public roads. For cars registered after 1 April 2017, the amount you pay for the first year is based on the vehicle's CO2 emissions. After the first year, a flat standard rate applies, though a pricey surcharge is added for cars with a list price over £40,000.

This system is designed to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly cars. However, significant changes are coming, especially for electric vehicles. Our calculator is kept up-to-date with the latest rates from GOV.UK.

Important: EV Tax Changes from 2025

From 1 April 2025, electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from VED. New and existing EVs will be required to pay the standard rate. This calculator reflects the current tax year rules.
