Understanding the UK Minimum Wage

The UK government sets minimum wage rates to ensure workers receive fair pay. These rates, reviewed annually, fall into two main types: the National Living Wage (NLW) for those 21 and over, and the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for younger workers. The NLW is the highest rate, currently £12.21 per hour for the 2025/26 tax year.

Calculators & Reference Tools

The NMW has tiered rates for different age groups to reflect varying levels of experience. This Calculator Site tool helps you quickly calculate your earnings based on these official rates. For a detailed breakdown of your earnings after tax and National Insurance, check out our Take-Home Pay Calculator.

Gross Pay vs. Net Pay

are your gross pay, which is your total pay before any deductions. Your actual take-home pay, or net pay, will be lower after income tax and National Insurance contributions are subtracted. It is illegal for an employer to pay you less than the statutory minimum wage.

The hourly rate you are entitled to depends on your age and whether you are an apprentice. The rates are updated each April.
