For most students in England, university involves two main costs: tuition fees and living costs. Tuition fees, currently capped at around £9,250 per year, are covered by a Tuition Fee Loan from the government. Living costs are covered by a means-tested Maintenance Loan. Both are bundled into a single student loan debt.
The key thing to understand is that this debt doesn't function like a normal loan. Repayments are 'income-contingent', meaning you only pay it back if you earn over a certain threshold. For recent students on Plan 2, this is £25,000 per year. You repay 9% of your income above this amount. After 40 years, any remaining debt is completely written off. This makes it more like a graduate tax than a traditional debt. Explore your potential repayments with our Student Loan Calculator.
Don't Forget About Interest
Even though repayments are manageable, your student loan starts accumulating interest from the day you take it out. The interest rate is typically the Retail Price Index (RPI) plus up to 3%, depending on your income. This means the total debt amount can grow to a very large number, but since it's written off after 40 years, most people will never repay the full amount.
The UK student finance (see GOV.UK) system is defined by several key figures. These numbers determine the cost, the repayment terms, and the overall financial impact of higher education. See how your salary is affected with our Salary Calculator.
